The Whitney STEM Camp was a free 4-day hands-on STEM program hosted by SKITS at Whitney High School for elementary school students in grades 1–6. The camp focused on making science and engineering fun, interactive, and easy to understand through a mix of short lessons and hands-on activities.


Students explored engineering by building marshmallow and pasta towers and designing marshmallow catapults, and they learned biology through a seed sprout lab and a strawberry DNA extraction experiment. Each day introduced a different STEM concept, such as structure, force, plant growth, cells, and genetics, while volunteers helped guide students through the activities.


The camp gave younger students a creative way to engage with STEM beyond the classroom. From testing how tall a tower could stand to watching seeds sprout and pulling DNA from strawberries, every experiment was designed to be hands-on and memorable. SKITS volunteers made each lesson accessible and exciting, breaking down complex ideas into activities that students could see, build, and try for themselves.
